If you’ve spent any time in the ROM hacking corner of the internet over the last year, you’ve probably heard someone yell “MARIOMON” at you unprompted. That’s not an accident.
Super Mariomon took a Pokémon Emerald cartridge, gutted it completely, and rebuilt it as a full Mushroom Kingdom adventure and it’s one of the few Mario Pokémon crossover hacks (or, if you want to flip the words around, a Pokémon Mario rom hack) that actually holds up past the “haha funny sprite swap” phase.
I’ve put a lot of hours into this one, and I want this page to be the actual resource I wish existed when I started: a clean Super Mariomon download, an honest explanation of what the game is, and direct paths into our walkthrough, best team, and cheats guides instead of burying everything in one giant wall of text. Let’s get into it. Whether you typed in “Mariomon,” “Super Mariomon ROM,” “Mario Pokémon rom hack,” or even “Pokémon but it’s Mario” to land here, you’re in the right place.
What Is Super Mariomon, Really?
Super Mariomon is a Pokémon Emerald ROM hack directed by YouTuber Alpharad sometimes shorthanded online as “Alpharad Mariomon,” since he’s the face most people associate with the project and built by the development team Too Many Productions (led by a developer who goes by Kobazco). It started as a long-running Twitch project: Alpharad’s chat literally helped beat the game in a “Twitch Plays” format before the patch went public in April 2025.
But calling it a “ROM hack” undersells what’s actually going on here. A lot of crossover hacks just reskin Pokémon sprites and call it a day. Super Mariomon rebuilt almost everything:
- Every single Pokémon is gone. In their place are 151 custom designed Mariomon, each with its own original typing, stats, abilities, and evolution line not just a Goomba sprite slapped over a Rattata stat block.
- The 8 Gyms are gone too. You’re now chasing 8 Power Stars scattered across themed worlds of the Mushroom Kingdom.
- The Hoenn map is gone. You navigate between worlds through a Warp Zone hub, more like a Mario level-select screen than a normal Pokémon region.
- The entire soundtrack is custom Mario music. Not a single Pokémon track survived.
The story frame is intentionally light and goofy: Princess Peach and Professor E. Gadd are hosting a kingdom wide competition (the devs call it the C.A.P. challenge), and whoever collects all 8 Power Stars first wins a wish. You play as Mario. Bowser, of course, has other plans. It’s not trying to be a deep narrative it’s there to give the world a reason to exist, and it gets out of the way so the battling and exploring can do the talking.
Quick tip: if you’re coming from a normal Pokémon game, don’t assume Mariomon typing follows Pokémon logic. A character’s type here is based on their role in the Mario games, not their color or vibe. Check the in-game Mariodex before you commit to a team more on that in our best team guide.
Super Mariomon Download
Super Mariomon isn’t a standalone ROM it’s distributed as a patch file that you apply to a clean Pokémon Emerald (USA) ROM. That’s standard for ROM hacks, and it’s what keeps the project legally distributable, since no original Nintendo/Game Freak code is being shared directly. You’ll also see it written different ways around the internet Super Mariomon ROM download, SuperMariomon, Super Mario Mon, even Super Mariowon they all point to the same patch file.

How to Patch and Install It
- Download a clean Pokémon Emerald (USA) ROM. We don’t host this directly you’ll need your own legally dumped copy.
- Download the Super Mariomon patch file from our download page.
- Use a patching tool Lunar IPS for desktop, or UniPatcher if you’re patching on Android to apply the patch to your clean Emerald ROM.
- Load the patched ROM in mGBA (the only officially supported emulator other emulators may run it but aren’t guaranteed to behave correctly).
- Save often, and don’t skip the intro there are a few options (like Nuzlocke mode) you can only set at the very start.
Tip: if your patched ROM won’t boot, the most common cause is patching onto the wrong Emerald region or a ROM that’s already been modified. Start from a clean USA dump every time
Features of Super Mariomon
This is the part that actually convinced me to stick with it past the first hour. It’s not just a meme reskin there’s real design work under the hood:
- 151 custom Mariomon every creature was built from scratch with its own stats, abilities, moves, and evolution line, pulling characters from across the entire Mario franchise (classic platformers, Mario 64, Paper Mario, Odyssey, and more).
- 8 Power Stars instead of Gyms the gym-leader structure is replaced with Power Star challenges spread across themed Mushroom Kingdom worlds.
- Warp Zone navigation instead of walking linear routes, you jump between worlds from a central hub, and several worlds can be tackled in flexible order.
- Built-in Nuzlocke mode toggle Nuzlocke rules right at the start of a new save, no external tracking tools required.
- Dynamic level scaling + Level Caps encounters and challenges stay appropriate to your progress no matter which world you tackle first, so the difficulty curve never spikes or flattens depending on routing.
- The Pit a postgame battle gauntlet with checkpoints every 7th floor and rental Mariomon entering the mix from floor five onward, for players who want a real test after the main story.
- No trading required every evolution method was reworked so a second cartridge or link cable is never needed.
- Quality-of-life extras Dialog Skip for major story beats, and Infinite Rare Candies for managing levels without grinding forever.
- A real competitive scene there’s an active VGC-style tournament format and community-built tier lists around Mariomon, and yes, the Mariomon based on a certain blue hedgehog cameo is genuinely banned from competitive play for being too strong.
Gameplay: What You’re Actually Playing
Mechanically, Super Mariomon runs on the same Gen 3 Pokémon engine, so if you’ve played a Gen 3 Pokémon game, the controls and menus will feel instantly familiar. The differences show up in the details.
Instead of memorizing 18 Pokémon types, you’re learning a typing system built specifically for the Mario cast. Koopas, Boos, Piranha Plants they all got type combinations and abilities designed around their actual role in Mario games, not a copy-paste from their closest Pokémon equivalent. Early on you’ll mostly run into Goomba-tier common encounters, with rarer, stronger Mariomon (working up to Bowser himself as a true late-game powerhouse) showing up as you push further into the Mushroom Kingdom.
The level scaling is the other big shift. Because the Warp Zone lets you choose your own order through several worlds, the developers built in dynamic scaling and Level Caps so the game doesn’t fall apart no matter which world you tackle first. You can’t just grind one early area to trivialize the rest of the game, which keeps battles meaningful the whole way through something a lot of classic Pokémon games genuinely struggle with.
If you’ve ever wanted a Nuzlocke run that doesn’t feel like every other Nuzlocke run, this is worth trying specifically for that reason the open world order means your available Mariomon pool depends entirely on which worlds you commit to early, so no two Nuzlocke attempts play out the same way.
Super Mariomon Walkthrough Overview
We’ve got a full step by step Super Mariomon walkthrough with detailed routing, but here’s the shape of the adventure so you know what you’re walking into:
The Setup
You start as Mario, pulled into Princess Peach and Professor E. Gadd’s kingdom wide competition. The goal: collect all 8 Power Stars before Bowser does. From here, you’re funneled toward the Warp Zone hub.
The Warp Zone Worlds
Rather than routes connecting town to town, you’ll select themed worlds from the Warp Zone. Several are open to you early, and which one you pick first genuinely changes your run different worlds have different available Mariomon, so your team composition early-game depends on your routing choices. Our full walkthrough breaks down which worlds are accessible at each stage and what to prioritize in each one.
Power Star Challenges
Each world ends in a Power Star challenge these function like Gym battles, with a themed trainer and a team built around that world’s identity. Because of the level scaling, you’ll want to check our walkthrough for recommended levels before each challenge rather than assuming “just be 5 levels higher” the way you might in a vanilla Pokémon game.
Postgame: The Pit
Once you’ve collected all 8 Power Stars and finished the main story, The Pit opens up a floor-based gauntlet with checkpoints every 7th floor and rental Mariomon entering the mix from floor five onward. This is where the competitive-minded players spend most of their time, and it’s a real test even after you’ve “finished” the game.
For exact encounter locations, item pickups, and boss team compositions floor by floor, head to the full walkthrough we didn’t want to cram a 4,000 word route guide into the homepage and bury the stuff you came here for.
Characters: Who You’re Actually Playing With
Mario
The protagonist, naturally. As a Mariomon, Mario leans into a well rounded, balanced design that makes him a flexible early to mid game pick rather than a min maxed specialist a solid anchor while you’re still learning the game’s typing system.
Luigi
Mario’s regular partner in crime, frequently discussed as one of the stronger early-route picks in the community. Luigi tends to complement Mario rather than overlap with him, which is part of why the two get recommended as a pair.
Bowser
The endgame heavyweight. Bowser is built as a true late-game powerhouse the kind of capture you’re working toward rather than one you’ll have on your team from hour one. He also doubles as your main story antagonist, chasing the same 8 Power Stars you are, which gives the otherwise lighthearted plot its only real tension.
For a full breakdown of typing, stats, and where each of these (and the other 148 Mariomon) fit into a competitive or casual team, check our Super Mariomon best team guide type matchups in this game genuinely don’t map onto what you’d expect from regular Pokémon, so it’s worth reading before you lock in a starting six.
Super Mariomon Cheats and Tips
A few honest tips, not generic filler:
- Don’t skip the Mariodex. Because typing is original to this hack, assuming a Mario character’s type based on vibes (Bowser = Fire, obviously, right?) will get you punished in battle. Check before you commit.
- Set Nuzlocke mode at the very start if you want it. Like most built-in challenge modes, it can’t be toggled once your save has begun.
- Respect the Level Caps instead of fighting them. The scaling system is there to keep things fair across different world orders grinding around it usually just makes the early game boring without making the late game easier.
- Use Infinite Rare Candies sparingly. They’re a convenience feature for managing levels within the cap, not a tool to break the level scaling entirely.
- The Pit’s checkpoints are every 7 floors. If you’re attempting a long streak, plan your team’s stamina and item usage around hitting that 7th-floor checkpoint, not just individual fights.
- mGBA is the only officially tested emulator. Other emulators might run the patch, but if you hit a weird bug, switching to mGBA is the first troubleshooting step before reporting it anywhere.

Emerald. It sometimes gets lumped in with FireRed hacks because of how common those are, but Super Mariomon requires a clean Pokémon Emerald (USA) ROM as its base.
The hack was developed by Too Many Productions, led by a developer known as Kobazco, and directed and sponsored by YouTuber Alpharad. It was streamed and play-tested live on Alpharad’s Twitch channel before its public release in April 2025.
No. Every evolution method was reworked specifically so trading isn’t required a deliberate design choice to make the game friendlier for solo play.
Yes, and it’s built directly into the game. You can toggle it at the start of a new save without needing any external randomizer or tracking app. Just remember it has to be set before you begin it can’t be turned on mid-save.
mGBA is the only officially tested emulator for Super Mariomon. Other GBA emulators may work, but compatibility isn’t guaranteed, so if you run into glitches, try mGBA before assuming it’s a bug in the hack itself.
151 Matching the original Pokémon Red/Blue count, but every single one is an original design built around a Mario character rather than a reskinned Pokémon.
Most players clear the main story in around 25 hours. Going for full completion catching all 151 Mariomon and clearing the postgame runs closer to 40 hours.
Yes. Too Many Productions runs an official Discord, and along with the in-game Hackdex, it’s one of the only sources the team treats as legitimate for patches, updates, and bug reports. We link to it from our download page be cautious of random mirror sites claiming to host the same server or files.
The hack has continued receiving updates and patches since its April 2025 release. Check our download page for the current version before patching, since version numbers do change.
